The nation’s police forces play a vital role in fighting crime and promoting public safety. They are the most visible law enforcement agency. Every day, people can see the nation’s police force carrying out essential activities such as road safety, security checks, investigations and crime prevention. The police forces are also mobilized to manage public safety from civil disorder in the country, natural disasters, combatting organised crime, guarding state institutions from external threats such as espionage, and in general contribute to foreign policy objectives of the state. While these activities are infrequently seen by the public, they are nonetheless important to the national security of a state and its democracy. However, there is little appreciation of this role by the media and politicians.
The sunny afternoon of December 23, 2020 saw the 33rd Passing Out Parade of 1200 Islamabad Police recruits at the Police Headquarter, Islamabad. Prime Minister Imran Khan made history as he attended the police passing out parade making it the first time any premier of the country has encouraged police in this manner. The Minister for Interior, Shaikh Rasheed and Inspector General Police, Muhammad Amir Zulfiqar were also present at the ceremony that was attended widely by foreign dignitaries, politicians, government officials, academics, lawyers, chambers representatives and notable members of the society.
Police plays a key role in preserving our national security. Its job is vital in protecting it and maintaining an order without which it won’t be possible. National Security involves the protection and advancement of a state’s national interests i.e. the protection of democratic institutions, sovereignty of the state’s borders, countering espionage, serious and organised crime, and terrorism, and ensuring favorable regional situation for the government to advance the nation’s economic and political goals in the international community.
The rapid changes in the regional and international security has a strong impact on Pakistan’s national security; creating multiple challenges and opportunities for law enforcement agencies. Religious extremism, sectarianism and economic instability are fundamental variables of internal security threats to Pakistan. For over a decade, the threats emerging from these factors has devastated the country. However, since 2016, we see a surge of a policy shift towards zero tolerance for violence in dealing with these threats.
While speaking at the occasion the Prime Minister emphasized that no nation can prosper without its police forces guarding and maintaining the law and order situation of the country. He encouraged the young recruits to stay scrupulously committed to their duties and to always choose the righteous path to uplift the image of police to win the hearts of the general public and citizenry at large.
While paying rich tribute to the dedication and determination of the police forces the premier promised the provision of health cards and affordable housing to the police. He further announced that the Government will do its best to increase the salaries of the Islamabad police.
The audience was captivated while lauding the exquisite display of bravery, valor and skills of the young men and women of the police as they presented the March Past and demonstrated their rigorous training through activities such as rappling and blind folded weapon handling. Women in combat and gender inclusivity was a key take away; as our police women are now recruited in mainstream forces including counter terrorism departments.
PM has encouraged police force of Pakistan as no other politician has done so. He has set a precedent for other premieres of the country to follow as well. Indeed, such events cultivate a sense of patriotism in an individual’s heart while restoring their respect and trust in the respectable institution of police and thus building on the social contract between citizens, police and society.
