The role of remittances and labor migration in Pakistan’s economy is pivotal, creating an essential part in the country’s socio-economic landscape. Pakistan is a top list recipient of remittances and benefits greatly from the financial contribution of its diaspora. Remittances represent a vital lifeline for countless households and contribute significantly to poverty alleviation and improved living standards. Labor migration dates to oil boom in the Middle East in 1970s, which saw a substantial outflow of Pakistani workers. This trend has continued with millions of Pakistanis employed in Gulf States like Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. However, the dependence on remittances is not without challenges because economy’s dependence on external labor markets makes it vulnerable to global economic fluctuations and geopolitical shifts. In addition, the emigration of skilled professionals, often termed as “brain drain”, is a challenge to the domestic labor market, potentially limiting development and growth of critical sectors such as technology and healthcare.

Millions of Pakistanis have moved abroad for jobs, education, better opportunities as well as facilities and eventually have settled there. The main motivation is to send money back home for financial support to the family. Migrant labor and expatriates settling in Middle East are usually involved in construction sector, manual labor roles and service sectors as drivers, domestic helpers, hotel staff and retail workers. Meanwhile, in North America and Europe, overseas Pakistanis are mostly involved in professional and skilled jobs, for example in healthcare, IT, academics, research, business, finance and part-time jobs as students. Remittances sent by them play crucial role in supporting families, economic stability and investment. Remittance sent to country can be used in investment and business establishment by people back at home which can create further income generation and monetary. This can greatly benefits economic development.

There has never been a time when Pakistan is not struggling with recurrent trade deficits, energy shortages, uncertain economic growth, increased foreign debts repayments and balance of payments crisis. This is the reason why remittances sent by Pakistani emigrants and labor migrants are a key source of income generation. According to recent data, remittances to Pakistan mostly come through expatriates in United Kingdom, United States and the Gulf as most migrants are from these three regions. In the Gulf region, Saudi Arabia has been the major contributor in terms of remittances but in the recent years overseas residents are facing challenges. Country’s nationalization strategy and fluctuating oil prices and production are some of those challenges. This year remittances have increased in the month of March and April and this increase has been calculated as the highest since April 2022 as per State Bank’s report. The higher inflows of remittances have allowed the country to pay its debt services. Trade deficit issue comes in the way of befitting from these inflows and getting of debt.

This shows the impact of remittances on economy as they are a vital source of foreign exchange of Pakistan and provide a buffer against economic instability. They bolster Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves and aid in stabilizing the currency and manage balance of payments. It is important for financing imports and repaying foreign debts. Their significant portion goes in household consumption as families rely on these funds for basic necessities. A decline in remittances has many disadvantages as it widens the current account deficit and puts pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Their deficiency disturbs financial position of the country. This is the reason why it is important for government to take steps in providing right skills to its public, especially youth, through vocational training programs and ensure institutional arrangements for feasibility to the overseas Pakistanis and for higher remittances flows. Recently, Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (BEOE) has aimed at promoting legal means for the transfer of remittances by facilitating emigrants in opening new bank accounts. A Pakistani expat can send up to $200 or above in one transaction without any fee from the Middle East. Promotion of use of legal channels for remittances is advised for maintain trust and good relations with foreign countries as will create positive image of expatriates.

In conclusion, while overseas Pakistanis considerably bolster the country’s economy, ensuring sustainable development requires addressing the vulnerabilities and leveraging the potential benefits more strategically. This involves the creation of conducive environments for investment, improving domestic job opportunities to retain skilled labor, and effectively utilizing the human capital formed through international experiences. Overseas Pakistanis are a source monetary strength for the country as remittances play an important part in economic stability. It is important to retain a balance in exchange of foreign currency. The intricate balance between advantages from overseas remittances and fostering a robust local economy will regulate Pakistan’s economic resilience and growth trajectory in the coming decades.
