The Center for Law and Security (CLAS) hosted a panel discussion on “Regulating Digital Space in Pakistan: The Way Forward” on January 14, 2025. The Panel was moderated by the ED of CLAS Mr. Rehman Azhar.

Mr. Usama Khilji advocated for constitutional protections for internet freedom, proposing the internet as a fundamental right and opposing internet shutdowns for their disproportionate impact.
Ms. Sadaf Khan, Co-founder of Media Matters for Democracy, emphasized digital literacy, a multi-stakeholder policy approach, and addressing gaps in cybercrime and AI regulation.
Digital rights activist Mr. Yawar Siddique, Co-founder of RepStack, underscored the economic importance of freelancers and entrepreneurs, who contribute 60% of Pakistan’s dollar income. He stressed fostering a supportive ecosystem for the digital workforce.
Advocate Sheikh Waqas Bin Aamir called for a phased, collaborative policy approach involving academia, media, and tech industries.

Ambassador Masood Khan, President of CLAS, concluded by highlighting Pakistan’s digital potential, noting its vast freelancer base and broadband access. He urged robust policies to leverage youth potential and align with global technological trends, emphasizing inclusive collaboration to secure a connected and prosperous future.

The event, attended by students and faculty, highlighted the critical need for aligning Pakistan’s digital space regulation with global and local challenges.
